Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe : The Visionary Engineer Who Transformed Sri Lanka

ANS KULASINGHA

In the annals of Sri Lankan history, few names resonate with the same authority in the field of infrastructure as Deshabandu Vidya Jyothi Arumadura Nandasena Silva Kulasinghe. Better known as Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe, he was a pioneering civil engineer, inventor, and visionary whose work bridged the gap between ancient Sri Lankan grandeur and modern industrial efficiency.

Often called the "Father of the Concrete Revolution," Kulasinghe’s legacy is etched into the very skyline of Sri Lanka, from the towering stupas of the Mahaweli to the futuristic curves of the Colombo Planetarium.

Early Life and Academic Brilliance

Born on October 26, 1919, in Udammita, Ja-Ela, Kulasinghe showed an early aptitude for technical sciences. He received his education at Maris Stella College, Negombo, and St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena, before entering the Ceylon Technical College.

Despite the challenges of the colonial era, he earned a B.Sc. in Engineering from the University of London. His career began in 1940 at the Norton Bridge Hydro Power Project, but it was his move to the Colombo Port Commission in 1944 that set the stage for his global contributions to structural engineering.

Kulasinghe CPC System and Pre-stressed Concrete

Dr. Kulasinghe is most celebrated for his revolutionary approach to pre-stressed and pre-cast concrete. In 1955, he introduced the Kulasinghe CPC system, a patented invention that transformed construction by making it faster, cheaper, and more durable.

Before his innovations, large-scale structures were heavily reliant on expensive, imported materials. Kulasinghe advocated for "indigenous engineering"—using local resources and innovative techniques to solve national problems.

"Dr. Kulasinghe was a practical engineer who spent more time in the field than in air-conditioned offices."
Dinesh Gunawardena, (Former Minister of Urban Development) -

Notable Inventions and Patents:

  • The Kulasinghe CPC System : A unique method for pre-stressing concrete.

  • Ferro-Cement Boat Building : He was the first to build a seaworthy fishing boat using reinforced concrete.

  • Alternative Concrete Supplements : He experimented with using rubber, paddy husk, and coir dust as supplements to traditional cement.

Architectural Marvels and Engineering Feats

Kulasinghe’s career was defined by "impossible" projects. He had a unique ability to apply complex mathematical shell design theories to create iconic structures.

A Leader of Institutions

Beyond his technical genius, Dr. Kulasinghe was a prolific institution builder. He was instrumental in establishing the infrastructure of modern Sri Lankan engineering, serving as the founder chairman of:

  • The State Engineering Corporation (SEC)
  • The Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB)
  • The National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD)
He also served as the Chancellor of the Open University of Sri Lanka and President of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL).

Honors and Recognition

In recognition of his selfless service and unparalleled brilliance, Dr. Kulasinghe received the highest honors a grateful nation could bestow:

  • Vidya Jyothi: For outstanding scientific and technological achievements.
  • Deshabandu: For distinguished service to the nation.
  • Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa): Awarded by the University of Moratuwa and University of Peradeniya.

The Legacy of a Patriot

Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe passed away on February 14, 2006, at the age of 86. At a time when many of his peers sought "greener pastures" abroad, Kulasinghe remained "glued to his native soil," dedicated to proving that Sri Lanka could produce world-class innovation.

Today, his methods continue to be taught in engineering faculties, and his monuments remain standing as a testament to a man who literally built the foundations of a modern nation.
