Philip Revatha "Ray" Wijewardene (1924-2010) was a multi-faceted Sri Lankan genius, often called a "Renaissance man" for his profound impact across engineering, agriculture, aviation, and sports. His life's work was defined by a relentless drive for innovation, a deep understanding of tropical ecosystems, and a steadfast commitment to sustainable development in his homeland. His pioneering spirit left an indelible mark on Sri Lanka and the world.
The Landmaster Hand Tractor: A Revolution in Agriculture
Wijewardene’s most celebrated invention was the
Landmaster two-wheeled hand tractor. He designed this in 1955 to provide small-scale farmers in developing nations with a low-cost, efficient alternative to manual labor and traditional methods.
The tractor was a remarkable success, mass-produced in the United Kingdom and exported globally, revolutionizing farming techniques across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This innovation, born from a desire to mechanize tropical farming, continues to be a staple in many agricultural communities today.

Pioneer of Sustainable Solutions
Beyond his mechanical inventions, Wijewardene was a passionate advocate for
sustainable agriculture. He recognized that long-term food security relied on working
with nature, not against it. His research and practical application of techniques like
Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT) helped to combat soil erosion on hilly terrains.
He also championed
agroforestry, specifically the use of
gliricidia trees to naturally fertilize coconut plantations, significantly increasing yields without harmful chemicals.
Wijewardene's forward-thinking approach extended to energy. He is widely considered the
"Father of Dendro Power" in Sri Lanka. He tirelessly researched and promoted the use of
biomass from fast-growing trees like gliricidia as a clean, renewable energy source. His efforts laid the foundation for
dendro thermal power, a technology now increasingly used for industrial electricity generation.
A Life of Diverse Excellence
Ray Wijewardene's accomplishments were not confined to engineering and agriculture. A man of many talents, he was an accomplished aviator, licensed to fly fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and even autogyros.
His love for flight led him to build and pilot his own
ultra-light aircraft, showcasing his hands-on approach to problem-solving. An exceptional sportsman, he represented Sri Lanka in sailing at the
1968 Olympics and won a silver medal at the
1970 Asian Games.
For his remarkable contributions to science, technology, and public service, he was awarded two of Sri Lanka's highest national honors:
Vidya Jyothi and
Deshamanya.
